JACK HARTE

Two Plays

Published by Scotus Press, Dublin, 2020.

This volume provides the texts of two of Jack Harte’s plays that have enjoyed very successful runs in Dublin theatres.

The Mysterious History of Things had a two-week run in the Viking Theatre in Clontarf in July/August, 2016, directed by Bairbre Ní Chaoimh and featuring Seamus O’Rourke and Zara Burdon Yeates. Emer O’Kelly wrote of the play in the Sunday Independent:

Harte's message is that we do not make history, we invent it, manipulate it, imagine it . . . and are it. It's a serious message, put across with considerable, if slightly rough-edged charm in a not-so-slight comedy by a writer more than usually aware of Ireland's many warts.

Killing Grandad ran for two weeks in the New Theatre in Temple Bar in March, 2020, and was the last show to close due to the Covid Lockdown. It was directed by Gerard Lee, and featured Michael Judd and Kevin McMahon. This is what Katy Hayes wrote about it in the Irish Independent:
Jack Harte creates a fresh and delightful 60 minute comic version of the military encounter between a young warrior, Lugh of the Long Arm, and an old warlord, Balor of the Evil Eye … The dialogue between the two men is underscored with a vibrant contemporary sensibility … Gerard Lee directs with a clear eye, emphasising that the play is primarily a homage to storytelling. A highly enjoyable encounter of the mini-epic kind.
